Poems: a series of collages inspired by the life and work of poets
My favorite poems are those that repeatedly draw me in, offering intriguing images and phrases that inspire new thoughts upon each reading. Like a swimmer in a lake, I alternate between looking at the scenery of the surface and exploring the depths below.
I am interested in creating work that blurs boundaries: landscape and abstraction, control and spontaneity, narrative and nonsense. Collage is the artistic medium which reminds me most of poetry. Fragments of images placed next to each other take on new meanings. And like a poem, the collage resists a simple, singular interpretation.
I am also inspired by the lives of creative people and hope to honor some of my favorite poets. My twin brother is a poet, and I love his work. Throughout our lives together we have each tried to form our own unique identities, but have also influenced and shaped each other. It is another blurred boundary, but one which I live. I am me, but in some ways, I am also him. How natural then that while he wants to write poems that feel like paintings and photographs, I am trying to create art that feels like a poem.
